The New Musical Development Collective (NMDC) was created in response to a dearth of development initiatives focused on musical theatre writers and a lack of diverse theatre makers. The NMDC identifies ‘diverse’ along race, gender, socio-economic, disabled, age and LGBTQ lines. For us, diversity is not about exclusion but about enriching the fabric of British theatre making and stories.
The NMDC is dedicated to creating, nurturing and fostering artists who identify as playwrights, songwriters, lyricists and composers; artists who will be given a space to work with no rules but proven principles that can be acknowledged and challenged in pushing the form beyond its current boundaries.
The NMDC exists as a year-long residency model. Working with organisations who have an interest in producing/developing new musicals, NMDC will take up residence running its annual Musical Theatre Lab in addition to creating and producing programmes tailored to the host organisation's needs. While we are London-based, we believe British musicals does not solely mean London musicals; therefore, we would love to actively work with organisations throughout the UK.
We are thrilled and very lucky to have Theatre Royal Stratford East as our first host organisation. Their tradition of producing ground-breaking new musicals and their dedication to developing new MT artists is an amazing starting point for the NMDC.
