It’s been a long time since my last blog – slap on the wrist!
It’s August and the group is somewhat dispersed – some are in Edinburgh – some have been to Jamaica – I’m currently in Derby directing a show (I’m supposed to be a composer – what’s that about, eh?!)
It feels like a sense of ‘we’ve got plenty of time – it’ll be fine’, is already transitioning into a sense of ‘time’s running out – we better get a move on’. I think that’s probably a useful pressure…
I think we’re all learning a lot about the process of writing musical theatre. I definitely am. I’ve written plenty of music for theatre, and plenty of songs, but hardly anything where the two are intrinsically combined. I’m finding it takes a lot longer to write when you’re considering how the music intertwines with dialogue; how a song interspersed with dialogue can still maintain it’s own structure; and how the information conveyed within the song (including the sound of the song) helps the scene it sits within.
It’s daunting, and it’s time consuming, but it’s rewarding. I will never nail this craft (has anyone?!). I think that’s OK though.
Finally, would you like to hear a song I can’t stop listening to?
